Giving

First, a quick word to our guests. We know money can be an “issue” for people, and we don’t want anything to distract a person’s attention from a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ. If you don’t consider yourself a member of Touchstone yet, please do not feel obligated to give. You are our guest, and we are glad you are here. You can leave this page and enjoy the rest of our website.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:7-8, NIV)

Why We Give

We give for the same reasons the people did in ancient Israel. We give to the Lord as an expression of our gratitude for his provision in our life, and as an expression of our trust in him that he will continue to provide for us.

In ancient Israel, the people of God gave the firstfruits of their crops and herds to the Lord at the Tabernacle, as a way of expressing their gratitude for God’s provision in their life, and to express their trust in God that he would continue to provide for them.

In our day, those of us who are followers of Jesus Christ also honor the Lord with our “firstfruits.” Most of us are not farmers or herders though, so the firstfruits we bring to the Lord are not portions of our crops or herds. Instead, we bring to the Lord a portion of our paycheck, or other financial means.

In our giving, there is both a looking back in gratitude, and a looking forward in trust for our future needs. When we give, we are saying through our action that we recognize that all we have has been given to us by the Lord, and we are thanking him for taking care of us. We owe every good thing in our life to the Lord. We give some of it back to him as a thank offering. Also when we give, we are saying that we are trusting the Lord to continue providing for us. When I give him a portion of my paycheck, for example, I am showing that I am trusting the Lord to take care of me in the future. It is an act of faith in his goodness to me.
